When I was a Kid
When I was a kid......

Before the Internet and the computer , Before semi automatics, crack and when Coke was really a soft drink only before SEGA or Super Nintendo...

Way back. when .......Hide and go Seek was so much fun . Those t imes when sittin' on the porch, smelling the aroma of bread your mom was baking.

Penny candy came in a brown paper bag. Ice cream cones that cost a nickel and a special treat was 5 flavor scoops for .a quarter. Playin' Pinball at the local soda shop which served real Sodas from a fountain. Vanilla Cokes, good cherry cokes, and malts . There you could meet up with your friends, listen to the jutebox and dance. Hey does this sound like Happy Days ? Well it was wasn't it

Hopscotch, butterscotch, doubledutch , playin Jacks, kickball, dodgeball. Mother May I? Red Rover, Roly Poly , Hula Hoops , Red light , Green light

Oh yeah there's more:
Watchin' Saturday Morning cartoons,on your TV " If you were lucky enough to have a TV. Some of your favorite programs were only 15 minutes long Watching Fat Albert, Road Runner, He-Man, The Three Stooges, Bugs, "Bunny" that is and not A bugs life. And everyday after school watchin your favorite show "The Mickey Mouse Club" Remember Spin and Marty ?

Or back further, listening to Superman on the radio. and the Green hornet. Or just sitting to read a book, while your dad listened to the boxing match on the radio as your mom was baking cookies in the kitchen for no special reason other then that is what moms did.

Catchin' lightening bugs in a jar, Watching wrestling with your family when the wrestlers did not condine violence or had crazy painted faces and half dressed women hangin on the ropes. .

Playin with a sling shot and not a real gun Other then maybe shooting the Red Rider bebe gun your got you for Christmas while dad watched to make sure your were being careful .

When around the corner seemed really far away, And going downtown with your friends seemed like you going somewhere. special

There was a Bedtime hour and you never questioned it . Climbing trees, for fun and back then swingin meant a board on ropes hanging from your backyard tree.

When you were sick from a cold Mom was always there with the Vicks for your chest as she lovingly tucked you in bed .. You never once had to call her at work at times like these and you never ever had to stay Home Alone or with a baby sitter. There as no such thing as day care.

How about in the summer gettin what seemed like million mosquito bites , swimming in the local creek because our family like most families didn't have their own pool. It never entered our minds that we should have a big swimming pool in our yard.

Playin Cops and Robbers, Cowboys and Indians, Jacks, Sittin on the curb with your friends, Jumpin down the steps, or sliding down the railing of the stairway oin your house,

Jumpin on the bed,. Pillow fights , Running till you were out of breath, Laughing so hard that your stomach hurt. Being tired from just playin'...
Remember that?

How about Eating Kool-aid powder with sugar out of the package with your fingers, wax lips, jacks in a box with a prize every time .
Saturday afternoon movies at the local theater were only .25 cents and no R ratings

Remember when..
There were two types of sneakers for girls and boys (Keds & PF Flyers) and the only time you wore them at school, was for "gym."

When nearly everyone's mom was at home when the kids got there. When nobody owned a purebred dog. When 50 cents was a decent allowance, and another quarter a miracle.

When milk went up one cent and everyone talked about it for weeks? When you'd reach into a muddy gutter for a penny When girls neither dated nor kissed until late high school, if then.

When getting ready for Christmas was a family event and every one had a job to do.Your Christmas tree was so filled with lights that you knew a fuse in your house would blow again for sure this year, but that was Christmas.
When decorating the outside of your house was not as important as the family decorating inside together.

Making a snowmen with mom and dad, making the best igloo in the neighborhood Sled riding down a hill using your sled or even a big piece of cardboard would do and no one thought you were different or your family was poor.because of it.

.Playing outside until your feet were blue .and every part of your body was numb.

Mom gently warming you up with a cup of hot chocolate as you sat by the stove and warmed your feet.

. A shower was not in every home . Hair dryers were not available to everyone, but you could choose to dry your hair when the coal furnace started to blow or you could even stand by the gas stove with the door open and bend over to dry your hair that way..
" Don't Laugh, gals really did these things".

Remember When wearing a dress to school was an everyday event, with bobby socks of course ? How about when wearing button up sweaters backwards was the big fashion ?

You never thought of going to bed with a guy on the first date or any date for that matter. Only the bad girls did that so you heard.

Remember when having a baby without being married was not a common event and the birth was never announced in the local papers.

Remember: When refunds on soda bottles was 2 cents . Back then you could return enough to the store to get enough money for gas in dad's car. $ 1.00 would let you drive around all night with your friends.

When your Mom wore nylons that came in two pieces. When all of your male teachers wore neckties and female teachers had their hair done, everyday.

When you got your windshield cleaned, oil checked, and gas pumped, without asking, this was Free every time. And, you didn't pay for air. Also you got trading stamps to boot! with your gas purchase.

When laundry detergent had free glasses, dishes or towels hidden inside the box.

When any parent could discipline any kid, or ask him to carry groceries, and do chores and nobody, not even the kid, thought of questioning this .

When it was considered a great privilege to be taken out to dinner at a real restaurant with your parents and you never did anything to embarrass your parents in public .

When they threatened to keep kids back a grade if they failed..and did!

When being sent to the principal's office was nothing compared to the fate that awaited you when you got home and your parents found out.

Basically, we were in fear for our lives, but it wasn't because of drive by shootings, drugs, gangs, etc Our parents and grandparents were a much bigger threat!
This is what you called RESPECT

I want to go back to the time when.
Decisions were made by going "eeny-meeny-miney-mo." Mistakes were corrected by simply exclaiming, "do over!"

"Race issue" meant arguing about who ran the fastest. Money issues were handled by whoever was the banker in "Monopoly."

Catching fireflies could happily occupy an entire evening. It wasn't odd to have two or three "best" friends. Being old, referred to anyone over 30.

The net on a tennis court was the perfect height to play volleyball and rules didn't matter as long as you were having fun.

The worst thing you could catch from the opposite sex was cooties. It was magic when dad would "remove" his thumb. It was unbelievable that dodgeball wasn't an Olympic event.

Having a weapon in school, meant being caught with a slingshot. Nobody was prettier than Mom. Scrapes and bruises were kissed and made better. It was a big deal to finally be tall enough to ride the "big people" rides at the amusement park.

Getting snow that almost was taller then you were was a dream come true . Abilities were discovered because of a "double-dog-dare."

Saturday morning cartoons weren't 30-minute ads for action figures. No shopping trip was complete, unless a new toy was brought home. "Oly-oly-oxen-free"" made perfect sense

Spinning around, getting dizzy and falling down was cause for giggles. The worst embarrassment was being picked last for a team,. or missing a simple word in the spelling bee at school

War
was a card game. Water balloons were the ultimate weapon. Baseball cards in the spokes transformed any bike into a motorcycle.Taking drugs meant orange-flavored chewable aspirin.

Ice cream was considered a basic food group. Older brothers and sisters were the worst tormentors, but also the fiercest protectors.

If you can remember most or all of these, then you have LIVED}!!!!

Didn't that feel good.. just to go back and say, Yeah, I remember that . There's nothing like the good old days! They were good then, and they're good now when we think about them.

Share some of these thoughts with a friend who can remember , then share it with someone that missed out on them. Taking a Break from Your Grown Up Life is something we all need at certain times in our lives
" Like Right Now"

I DOUBLE DOG DARE YA!!!
